5 Reasons To Eat Brussels Sprouts – I don’t know of too many people who love, or even like, for that matter, to eat Brussels sprouts.  I usually blog about beauty products that make your skin beautiful on the outside, but, from time to time, I will switch things up a bit and write about healthy foods to eat to get healthy skin started first from the inside.

Brussels sprouts have recently become one of my favorite vegetables to eat.  Like many people, I would turn my nose up at the very thought of eating them.  Over 2 years ago, while I was pregnant with my son, it was one of the foods I craved, and I’ve been in love with them ever since.  Brussels sprouts look like miniature cabbages and are similar in taste, so, if you like cabbage, I don’t think you will have a problem acquiring a taste for them!  Are you ready to see the 5 Reasons to eat Brussels sprouts?  🙂

POSSIBLE HEALTH BENEFITS

  1. Provides Nutrients – Raw Brussels sprouts contain excellent levels of vitamin C and vitamin K, with more moderate amounts of B vitamins, such as folic acid and vitamin B6.
  2. Fight Cancer – Brussels sprouts, as with broccoli, contain sulforaphane, a phytochemical under basic research for its potential anticancer properties. Although boiling reduces the level of sulforaphane, steaming and stir frying do not result in significant loss.
  3. Improve Bone Health – Low intakes of vitamin K have been associated with a higher risk for bone fracture. Adequate vitamin K consumption improves bone health by  improving calcium absorption and reducing urinary excretion of calcium.  Brussels sprouts also contribute to your daily need for calcium, providing 37 milligrams in one cup.
  4. Contains Vitamin C Which Helps Maintain Vision – Eating just one serving of Brussels sprouts per day would ensure you are getting enough of this vital nutrient. Another antioxidant found in Brussels sprouts is zeaxanthin.  Zeaxanthin filters out harmful blue light rays and is thought to play a protective role in eye health and possibly ward off damage from macular degeneration.
  5. Look Younger – The antioxidant vitamin C, when eaten in its natural form or applied topically, can help to fight skin damage caused by the sun, reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin texture.
    You may automatically reach for citrus fruits when you think of vitamin C, however Brussels sprouts provide  75 milligrams per cup, over 100% of your daily need. Vitamin A is also crucial for healthy looking skin, which Brussels sprouts also provide.

I prefer to eat Brussels sprouts oven-roasted!  Keep it simple with this short recipe:

Take frozen brussels sprouts and place in a large bowl. Pour olive oil and Mrs. Dash seasoning over sprouts and mix well. Place sprouts, evenly spaced and not stacked, on a baking sheet and place in a 400 degree oven for 40-45 minutes.
