Vitamin C Benefits – Does It Prevent These 3 C’s?
Vitamin C Benefits – Does It Prevent These 3 C’s? Every now and then I get the inspiration to write a blog centered on health and wellness. My last related blog to this topic was, 5 Reasons To Eat Brussels Sprouts. Am I a health expert or nutritionist? No, just curious and I love doing internet research (Oddly enough, I dreaded it in high school. 😀 )
What is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient involved in tissue repair. You can intake Vitamin C through foods – citrus fruits, potatoes, red peppers and tomatoes. Discovered in 1912, and first made in 1933, it is the most effective and safe medicines needed in a healthcare system. It is available as a generic prescription drug and over the counter.
The three C’s that I am curious about whether or not Vitamin C prevents or has any benefits for are Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, and the Common Cold.
Cancer & Vitamin C Benefits
According to the National Cancer Institute, high doses of Vitamin C has been studied as a treatment for patients with cancer since the 1970’s (in laboratory, animal, and human studies).
Laboratory Studies have shown:
- “High doses of Vitamin C may slow the growth and spread of prostate, pancreatic, liver, colon and other types of cells.”
Animal Studies have shown:
- “Tumor growths can be blocked with high-dose vitamin C treatment in certain forms of pancreatic, liver, prostate, and ovarian cancers, sarcoma, and malignant mesothelioma.”
Human Studies have shown:
- “Improved quality of life , as well as improvements in physical, mental and emotional functions have been shown with high-dose IV vitamin C in patients with cancer.”
Cardiovascular Disease & Vitamin C Benefits
According to an an article at Mercola.com titled, “Adequate Vitamin C Linked to Lower Risk for Heart Disease and Early Death”:
- “People who intake the highest amounts of fruits and vegetables had a 15% lower risk of heart disease and 20% lower risk of early death.”
- “A primary reason why people who eat lots of fruits and vegetables have a lower risk of heart disease and early death may be because of high vitamin C levels.”
- “Those with the highest plasma vitamin C levels also had significantly reduced heart-disease rates and all-cause mortality.”
Common Cold & Vitamin C Benefits
According to the Mayo Clinic‘s website article titled, “Cold Remedies: What works, what doesn’t, what can’t hurt”:
- “For the most part taking vitamin C won’t help the average person prevent colds.”
- “However, taking vitamin C before the onset of cold symptoms may shorten symptom duration.”
- “Vitamin C may provide benefit for people at high risk of colds due to frequent exposure. Example: children who attend group child care during the winter.”
